Eligibility Criteria for Vice President Post

Following are the eligibility criteria to become the Vice President of India:

  1. He must be Indian People or Citizen of India.
  2. His minimum age must be 35 years old.
  3. He must not hold any office or property or any profitable post of Central or State Government.
  4. He must be eligible to become the member of Rajya Sabha.
  5. He must not be the member of Parliament or any state Assembly and if he is a member of any house then he must have to resign from the post)

How Vice President of India is elected?

The Vice President of India is elected indirectly by the People of India. The elected members of Parliament house (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) vote the Vice President candidate and elect the Vice President of India.

Tenure of service

The tenure of service of Vice-President of India is 5 years. He can resign from his post and can be drummed out from his post before the end of his tenure.

Duties of Vice-President

The Vice-President of India do only two work:

  1. If a mishap happens to the President or he resigns from his post, then, Vice President manages all the work of the President. 
  2.  The Vice-President of India works as the speaker of Rajya Sabha.

India got Independent on the Year 1947 and our Constitution came into effect on 26th January, 1950. From 1950 we have seen a list of 13 President have governed India. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1988-1975)

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was the first Vice-President of Republic India. was the second President of India.He joined the Vice-President office on 13th May, 1952 and left the office on 12th May, 1957. We celebrate his birthday Teacher’s Day in India. He awarded with the Bharat Ratna in 1954.

Zakir Husain (1897-1969)

Zakir Husain was the second Vice-President of India. He took oath on 13th May, 1962 and his term ended on 12th May, 1967. He was the first Vice-President and first President of India from Muslim religion. He was awarded with both Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan.

V.V Giri (1894-1980)

V.V Giri was the third President of India. His tenure start date was 13th May, 1967 and end of his tenure was 3rd May, 1969. He was served as High Commissioner of India at Sri Lanka. He also has awarded with Bharat Ratna.

Gopal Swarup Pathak (1896-1982)

Gopal Swarup Pathak was the Fourth Vice-President of India. He started working as Vice-President of India on 31st August, 1969 and left on 30th August, 1974.

B. D. Jatti (1912-2002)

The full name of B.D Jatti is Basappa Danappa Jatti. He appointed as Vice-President of India on 31st August, 1974 and his term ended on 30th August, 1979. He was the popular leader of Indian National Congress.

Mohammad Hidayatullah (1905-1992)

Mohammad Hidayatullah become the Vice President of India on dated 31st August, 1979 and his term ended on 30th August, 1984. He was ellected without any oppose.

R. Venkataraman (1910-2009)

Full name of R. Venkataraman is Ramaswamy Venkataraman. He was a lawyer and a Politician in the profession. He was the 7th Vice-President  and 4th President of India. His term was started on 31st August, 1984 and his term was ended on 24th July, 1987.

Shankar Dayal Sharma(1918-2005)

Shankar Dayal Sharma  was the 8th Vice-President of India. He served as the Vice-President of India from 3rd September 1987 to 24th July, 1992.

K. R. Narayanan (1921-2005)

Full name of K. R. Narayanan  is Kocheril Raman Narayanan. He was the tenth President and 9th Vice-President of India. He worked as the Vice-President of India from 21st August, 1992 to 24th July, 1997.

Krishan Kant (1927- 2002)

Krishan Kant was the 10th Vice-President of India. He served as the Vice-President of India from 21st August, 1997 to 27th July, 2002. 

Bhairon Singh Shekhawat (1924- 2010)

Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was the 11th Vice-President of India. He served as the President of India from 19th August, 2002 to 21st July, 2007. He is the first Vice-President from bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)

Mohammad Hamid Ansari (1937- )

Mohammad Hamid Ansari was the 20th Vice-President of India. He srved as the President of India from 11st August, 2007 to 11th August 2017. He was one of leader of Indian National Congress Party.

Venkaiah Naidu (1947- )

Venkaiah Naidu is the current working anf 13th Vice-President of India. He started as the Vice-President of India on 11st August, 2017. He is also the current working Speaker of Rajya Sabha.
